The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Friday adopted a resolution calling for national unity and resolve, urging the Indian government to isolate and penalize Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The resolution comes amidst escalating tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, following the attack, which was attributed to cross-border terrorism.
The CWC resolution emphasized that this is a critical time for the nation to demonstrate collective strength, with a strong message aimed at Pakistan. The committee urged the country to unite and send an unequivocal message that India will not tolerate terrorism and that those responsible for the attack must face severe consequences. “This is a time for demonstrating our collective will as a nation to teach Pakistan a lesson and curb terrorism decisively. The masterminds and perpetrators of this cowardly attack must face the full consequences of their actions,” the resolution stated, underscoring the demand for justice and accountability.
The CWC also called for political unity, urging all parties to rise above partisan divides. The resolution emphasized that this is not a time for political games but for national solidarity, highlighting the importance of presenting a united front in the face of such challenges. It stressed that India must show unwavering resolve to counter Pakistan’s support for terrorism and send a strong message both domestically and internationally.
In addition to the demand for justice, the Congress resolution placed a focus on the support and rehabilitation of the families affected by the attack. The committee argued that while compensation was necessary, it was not enough. Long-term rehabilitation, mental health support for the victims, and honoring the memory of those lost were seen as equally important. “Compensation alone is not enough, long-term rehabilitation, mental health support, and honoring the memory of those lost through national recognition and civic remembrance are equally essential,” the resolution noted. This call reflected the need for a comprehensive response that goes beyond immediate financial compensation and addresses the emotional and social impact of the attack on the victims and their families.
Furthermore, the CWC demanded sustained moral and institutional support for the families of the victims, acknowledging that the emotional trauma and long-term recovery would require more than just financial aid. The resolution also outlined specific actions the government should take, urging the Centre to act with firmness, strategic clarity, and international coordination to isolate Pakistan and hold it accountable for its continued support of terrorism. “The Congress Party urges the Government of India to act with firmness, strategic clarity, and international coordination to isolate and penalize Pakistan for its continued export of terror into our territory,” the resolution asserted.
In light of the attack, the CWC also appealed to Indian citizens to remain united and calm. The committee stressed the importance of social cohesion and restraint in the face of provocation, urging citizens to stand together in a time of crisis and ensure that national unity is maintained.
This resolution highlights the Congress Party's stance on national security, urging decisive action against Pakistan while calling for collective solidarity in tackling terrorism. It reflects the party’s call for a comprehensive, unified approach that includes both political unity within India and international diplomatic efforts to hold Pakistan accountable for its role in fostering terrorism.
