Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced a major infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming Guwahati into a premier destination for hospitality and tourism. Speaking after a Bhoomi Poojan ceremony for two new Marriott hotels near the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport, Sarma revealed that a total of 11 five-star hotels are set to come up in the city. This development is part of a broader vision to enhance Guwahati’s profile as a hub for luxury tourism, business, and high-end events.

Out of the proposed 11 hotels, two Marriott hotels will be located near the airport, while two Taj Hotels are to be constructed in the upcoming Aerocity area. Additional establishments include a Lemon Tree Hotel along the National Highway and an expansion of the Radisson Blu Hotel, which will add 100 more rooms to its existing infrastructure. A new Taj Hotel will also replace the existing Taj Vivanta in Khanapara. Furthermore, four more Marriott hotels are in the pipeline, bringing a total of six Marriotts to Guwahati.

The two Marriott hotels near the airport are expected to be built on 76 bighas of land, and form a significant part of the initiative. These developments stem from a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Assam government and Junali Construction Private Limited during the Advantage Assam 2.0 investment summit. The MoU kickstarted detailed planning and coordination with the state, paving the way for construction to begin.

Sarma stressed the strategic location of these upcoming luxury hotels, noting their potential to attract both domestic and international tourists. He particularly emphasized the growing trend of destination weddings and noted that Guwahati is poised to capitalize on this market with its improved luxury accommodation options. "These hotels will soon become widely known and sought-after for various high-end events," Sarma added.

This large-scale hospitality expansion is not just aimed at tourism but also aligns with the state’s broader economic vision. The construction and subsequent operation of these hotels are expected to create numerous employment opportunities across sectors such as hospitality, construction, transportation, and services. By fostering this growth, the government hopes to stimulate the local economy and offer long-term economic benefits to the region.

Adding to the momentum, Sarma also referred to a separate development where business tycoon Mukesh Ambani has pledged to establish an Oberoi Hotel in Guwahati. This indicates growing interest from major private investors in Assam’s hospitality sector, further solidifying Guwahati’s standing as a major urban and commercial center in the Northeast.

Overall, this announcement signifies a transformational shift in Assam’s tourism and infrastructure planning. With the backing of both government initiatives and private sector participation, Guwahati is on course to emerge as a luxury tourism hotspot, catering to both leisure and business travelers while also supporting regional economic growth.
