A Mexican Navy sailing ship, Cuauhtemoc, collided with New York City’s iconic Brooklyn Bridge late Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least two crew members and injuries to 19 others, as reported by New York Mayor Eric Adams. The ship, carrying 277 people, sustained significant damage with all three of its masts snapping upon impact. Two of the injured remain in critical condition.

The accident occurred as the ship sailed underneath the bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Manhattan. Videos posted online show the ship’s masts crashing into the bridge’s deck and partially collapsing. The vessel, flying a large green, white, and red Mexican flag, then drifted toward the riverbank as onlookers rushed away from the shore. Witnesses observed sailors hanging from the damaged rigging before rescue teams arrived.

Sydney Neidell and Lily Katz, who witnessed the event while watching the sunset, described seeing a person dangling from the harness on the ship’s mast for about 15 minutes before being rescued. They also saw two individuals being removed from the vessel on stretchers and placed into smaller boats.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the two crew members and extended solidarity and support to their families. The Mexican Navy confirmed that the training vessel Cuauhtemoc was damaged in the accident, which has halted its voyage. The navy and local authorities are reviewing the status of personnel and equipment while providing assistance.

Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that its ambassador to the United States and officials at the Mexican consulate in New York are coordinating with local authorities to assist the affected cadets but did not disclose details about injuries.

Despite the collision, the 142-year-old Brooklyn Bridge suffered only minor damage. The bridge, opened in 1883, spans nearly 1,600 feet and is supported by two masonry towers. It carries over 100,000 vehicles and around 32,000 pedestrians daily and remains a major tourist attraction.

The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by relevant authorities. The incident has drawn widespread attention due to the historical significance of the bridge and the severity of the accident involving a naval training ship. Both the Mexican Navy and New York City officials are working closely to manage the aftermath and ensure the safety of all personnel involved.
