A 53-year-old British man from Liverpool was arrested after he deliberately drove his car into a crowd of Liverpool football fans celebrating their Premier League victory on Monday in northwest England. The attack injured about 27 people, including four children, with one child and one adult in serious condition. Police stated the man acted alone and the incident is not being investigated as terrorism. Around 20 people received minor injuries treated at the scene, while others were hospitalized. Four victims, including a child, were trapped under the van and were freed by firefighters lifting the vehicle.

Following the car stopping, angry fans tried to attack the vehicle, smashing windows, but police prevented them from reaching the driver. Witness Harry Rashid, who attended the parade with his wife and two daughters, described how the car rammed into people about three meters away from him. He said the car was moving very fast and continued to plough through the crowd despite people charging at it. Rashid expressed shock and disbelief, emphasizing the victims were innocent fans enjoying the parade.

The incident took place after a massive city center celebration where hundreds of thousands of fans braved rain and waved flags and scarves to watch Liverpool players display the Premier League trophy atop buses with “Ours Again” slogans. The parade route spanned 10 miles (16 kilometers) and lasted several hours, guarded by a strong police and security presence. Fireworks from the Royal Liver Building marked the end of the procession.

Liverpool last won the Premier League during the COVID-19 pandemic, when public celebrations were banned due to lockdown restrictions. Peter Jones, who traveled from the Isle of Man to witness the victory celebrations, recounted hearing frantic car beeping, followed by a vehicle speeding past and people chasing it. He saw at least six people knocked down and described chaos as police and medics rushed to treat injured fans on the roadside.

The attack shocked the city and cast a "very dark shadow" over what had been a day of joy and celebration, according to Liverpool city council leader Liam Robinson, who spoke about the incident on social media. The attack not only caused injuries and fear but also deeply affected the community spirit during a moment that was meant to unite and celebrate the club’s achievement. The police emphasized the incident as isolated and ruled out terrorism, focusing instead on the investigation of the man’s motives and actions.

Overall, the event was a tragic disruption amid a festive occasion, highlighting concerns over public safety and the vulnerability of large gatherings. The aftermath saw a strong emergency response, support for victims, and calls for calm among supporters and the wider community. This shocking act of violence at a celebratory event brought attention to security and the importance of protecting peaceful public festivities.
