In a significant step towards veteran empowerment, Assam Skill University and the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Government of Assam, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 29 May 2025 to support ex-servicemen and their families. The agreement, formalized at the university campus with the presence of Assam Skill University’s Vice Chancellor Shri Subhash Das and Directorate of Sainik Welfare’s Director Brig Ploash Choudhury, aims to facilitate the smooth integration of veterans into the civilian workforce.

The collaboration seeks to leverage the extensive hands-on experience acquired by ex-servicemen during their military careers by aligning these skills with Assam Skill University’s expertise in training and certification. This synergy is designed to prepare veterans for various roles across industries, government sectors, and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). By doing so, the initiative not only recognizes and honors the valuable skills developed in the armed forces but also eases veterans’ transition into civilian employment markets, addressing a critical need for both the individuals and the economy.

Rehabilitation stands at the core of this alliance, especially considering many ex-servicemen retire at a relatively young age, often leaving 15 to 20 years of potential working life ahead. The programme is tailored to help these individuals find employment that matches their skills and aspirations, ensuring that their post-military careers are fulfilling and sustainable. Moreover, the partnership underscores the importance of supporting the widows and dependents of ex-servicemen, aiming to guide them towards stable and rewarding career opportunities, thereby extending the benefits of the programme to veteran families.

To ensure effective implementation, Col PN Giri and Dr Jagadish Nath have been appointed as Single Points of Contact (SPOCs) for their respective organizations. Their roles include overseeing the programme’s refinement, addressing challenges, and ensuring that the initiative meets its intended objectives. This structured approach is intended to streamline operations and maximize impact.

Highlighting the significance of the collaboration, Shri Subhash Das emphasized the importance of capitalizing on the unique skills possessed by ex-servicemen to meet the evolving needs of the workforce. He also suggested that this initiative could serve as a prototype for similar programmes across India. Brig Ploash Choudhury expressed optimism about the partnership’s transformative potential for veterans and their families, appreciating the collaborative spirit and shared vision.

The MoU marks a crucial milestone in integrating ex-servicemen and their dependents into mainstream economic activities. Beyond creating employment opportunities, the programme contributes to nation-building and the socio-economic development of the Assam region. It exemplifies a broader commitment to honoring those who have served the nation by effectively channeling their expertise into civilian careers.

This partnership aligns with ongoing efforts to empower ex-servicemen through targeted assistance and support, ensuring a smooth transition from military to civilian life. It promotes economic self-sufficiency and improves the quality of life for veterans and their families. The emphasis on sustainable career pathways for dependents further enhances the initiative’s comprehensive and inclusive nature.

Overall, the MoU between Assam Skill University and the Directorate of Sainik Welfare represents a forward-thinking and holistic approach to veteran welfare and integration. By harnessing the experiences and skills of ex-servicemen, the initiative not only benefits individuals but also strengthens the broader economic framework of the region. This collaborative effort reflects Assam’s dedication to recognizing and supporting its veterans and their families, setting a commendable example for other states to follow.
