On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, the Barpeta District Administration organized a series of impactful initiatives aimed at spreading environmental awareness. The event was formally launched at Paanch Ali Chowk, the town square in the district headquarters, where senior officials gathered to witness a street play themed on the ill effects of plastic pollution—especially in rivers.

The street play, titled “Nodir Oxukh” (translated as “Ailment of the River”), was performed by a group of local artists. It delivered a strong message about the harmful impact of indiscriminate plastic disposal on water bodies. Through storytelling interwoven with traditional song and dance, the performance illustrated the degradation of natural ecosystems caused by human negligence, especially the irresponsible use of plastics.

The program was jointly organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department of Forest, and the District Administration, showcasing inter-departmental collaboration toward environmental education. The event was graced by several dignitaries including District Commissioner (in-charge) Diganta Baishya, ACS, Additional Deputy Commissioner Moushumi Chetia, ACS, Chairman of the Barpeta Municipal Board, Chabilal Das, and Cultural Officer Bidyut Bikash Das.

During the event, DC Diganta Baishya emphasized the urgency of adopting district-wide environmentally sustainable practices. He acknowledged the rising pollution levels and the continued reliance on plastics as pressing challenges. He stated, “The government has undertaken several steps to promote a healthy environment. Our street play should serve as a reminder that each of us must do our part to protect the environment.”

Chairman Chabilal Das addressed the gathering by elaborating on the history and significance of World Environment Day. He noted that commemorating such days should not be limited to one-day symbolic gestures, but must lead to sustained, year-round commitment toward pro-environmental practices. He warned of the serious dangers posed by global warming and plastic pollution, calling them significant threats to both the region and the world at large.

In line with government-led green initiatives, the District Administration took active steps in tree plantation. Saplings were planted at Ashok Park, a central landmark in Barpeta town, and were also distributed to the general public to encourage community participation in greening efforts.

To ensure widespread outreach, similar environmental programs were simultaneously conducted in all Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) within Barpeta district. These included tree plantation drives, awareness meetings, and cultural events promoting environmental consciousness.

In essence, Barpeta’s World Environment Day celebration stood out not only for its creative use of traditional art forms to spread awareness, but also for its clear focus on action-oriented, grassroots environmental activism. The district’s efforts reflected a model of community engagement, where government officials and citizens came together to act decisively for environmental sustainability.
