Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong expressed strong optimism about the future of India-China relations during a recent event in Kolkata, highlighting the deep-rooted civilizational ties between the two nations. Speaking at a felicitation programme for Indian students proficient in Chinese, Feihong emphasized that the relationship between India and China spans thousands of years and is founded on shared cultural and historical heritage. He voiced hope that bilateral ties would continue to improve and grow stronger in the coming years.

While interacting with the media, Feihong highlighted that the two countries have maintained close and friendly ties for the majority of their long histories. Referring to the ongoing border tensions, the ambassador recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier comments, stating that differences between India and China have been brief in the context of their extensive relationship. Feihong echoed this sentiment, urging both countries to look forward and focus on the future. He stressed the importance of the younger generation in enhancing mutual understanding, noting that young people play a vital role in building stronger people-to-people connections.

Feihong praised the Indian students honoured at the event, describing them as a symbol of hope for the future of India-China ties. He stated that their interest in learning the Chinese language and culture reflects a promising direction for bilateral relations. According to him, this engagement from the youth gives both nations a strong reason to work together in resolving ongoing issues and strengthening their relationship.

Addressing the sensitive issue of border tensions, the ambassador underscored the need for collaborative efforts from both countries. He emphasized that conflict resolution should not be limited to governmental initiatives but must also involve think tanks, academic institutions, and young scholars. According to Feihong, multi-level engagement is essential for creating an environment of peace and mutual trust.

Feihong also referred to a “very important consensus” reached between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the past, aimed at promoting "good neighbourly relationships" between India and China. He expressed confidence that this mutual understanding would result in positive developments and fresh opportunities for cooperation in the near future.

One of the practical steps toward improving relations, Feihong said, would be the resumption of direct flights between India and China, which have remained suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed hope that these flights would restart soon, boosting people-to-people contact and economic engagement.

The ambassador concluded by acknowledging that India-China relations are at a “critical stage.” He highlighted the upcoming milestone in 2025—the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations—as an opportunity to deepen ties. As part of the celebrations, Feihong announced plans to organize a youth exchange programme under which Indian students would visit several Chinese cities, including Beijing. This initiative is expected to foster greater cultural exchange, strengthen friendship, and lay a stronger foundation for future cooperation between the two Asian giants.
