In a distressing case unfolding in Meghalaya, Sonam Raghuvanshi, a 25-year-old woman from Indore, remains missing after her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, was found dead in a deep gorge near Sohra. The couple had gone on their honeymoon to Meghalaya, having married on May 11 and traveled to the northeastern state on May 20. They checked into a homestay at Nongriat village in East Khasi Hills district. On May 23, shortly after checking out, both Sonam and Raja disappeared. Raja's body was discovered on June 2, approximately 20 kilometers from the homestay, in a gorge near a waterfall. Meghalaya police registered a murder case following the discovery.
The disappearance and death have raised concerns and demands for a thorough investigation. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has stepped in, requesting Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident. Yadav has been in contact with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and confirmed that police officials from Madhya Pradesh are coordinating closely with their Meghalaya counterparts. In a public statement on the social media platform X, Yadav expressed solidarity with Sonam's family and reiterated his request for a CBI investigation, highlighting the seriousness of the matter.
Despite the murder case filed by Meghalaya police, there has been no breakthrough regarding Sonam's whereabouts. Her family remains deeply worried and dissatisfied with the state police’s efforts. Sonam’s father, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, accused the Meghalaya police of failing to conduct a proper investigation and alleged that his daughter might have been abducted and remains in captivity. The family has urged the central government to transfer the investigation to the CBI, hoping for a more effective probe.
Details about the couple’s movements reveal that they arrived in Mawlakhiat village on May 22, traveling on a rented scooter. They parked their vehicle and trekked down approximately 3,000 steps through a gorge to visit the renowned living root-bridges in Nongriat village. They stayed overnight at a homestay before leaving the next morning. On May 24, their scooter was found abandoned at a café along the road between Shillong and Sohra.
During the search, Meghalaya police recovered some personal items near the location where Raja’s body was found. These included a white shirt believed to belong to a woman, a strip of medicine, a fragment of a mobile phone LCD screen, and a smartwatch. The significance of these items remains under investigation.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the mysterious circumstances surrounding Raja’s death and Sonam’s disappearance, with growing public concern over the adequacy of the police investigation. The Madhya Pradesh government’s involvement and the request for a CBI inquiry highlight the demand for transparency and justice.
Efforts continue from multiple fronts to locate Sonam and bring clarity to the case. Meanwhile, authorities from both Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya maintain communication and coordination to facilitate the investigation. The incident remains a somber reminder of the challenges faced in handling cross-state cases and ensuring the safety of individuals traveling far from home. The outcome of the inquiry is awaited as the families seek closure and justice.
