The Assam Legislative Assembly is set to convene for a special one-day session on Sunday, June 8, with the dual aim of addressing urgent administrative matters and paying tribute to prominent cultural icons of the state. Though brief, the session holds considerable symbolic and legislative significance, as the House will focus on both policy-oriented discussions and meaningful ceremonial acknowledgments.

A central highlight of the session is the formal proposal to rename the Dibrugarh Airport after Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary artist and cultural icon of Assam. Widely revered as "Sudhakantha," Dr. Hazarika’s music, poetry, and contributions to the arts have become deeply embedded in the cultural identity of Assam. The proposal, already backed by the state cabinet, is expected to receive widespread support and evoke strong public sentiment. The renaming initiative is more than just symbolic; it is a lasting tribute to Dr. Hazarika’s impact and legacy. Legislators are expected to unanimously support this tribute, rising above party lines to honour a personality who continues to unite the people of Assam through his cultural contributions.

Beyond this homage, the assembly will turn its attention to a crucial development agenda: the Jal Jeevan Mission. This national initiative aims to provide piped drinking water to every rural household, and its effective implementation remains a key concern for the state. The session will include a comprehensive review of the mission’s progress, highlighting areas of success while identifying challenges and gaps in execution. The discussion is expected to delve into the practical aspects of rural water supply infrastructure, including logistical issues, funding requirements, and on-ground implementation strategies. The goal is to refine and accelerate the mission’s delivery, ensuring it meets the needs of rural populations and contributes to raising living standards.

Due to the time constraint of the one-day session, there will be no Question Hour, which typically allows MLAs to ask ministers specific questions about various issues. Instead, a Zero Hour has been scheduled, giving MLAs a platform to voice pressing concerns from their constituencies. This move is intended to ensure that immediate and urgent issues are still brought to the Assembly’s attention, despite the limited schedule. A range of constituency matters is expected to be raised, underscoring the real-time concerns of the public and the need for swift legislative response.

The renaming of Dibrugarh Airport, if formally approved, would be a symbolic step with long-lasting cultural implications. It is intended not only to honour the late Dr. Hazarika but also to inspire future generations to value and uphold the rich heritage of Assam. His values, music, and artistic vision continue to serve as a guiding force in preserving Assamese culture.

In summary, this special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly is expected to blend tribute with governance—addressing cultural pride while focusing on essential development agendas. The session reflects an effort to strike a thoughtful balance between symbolic recognition and practical action, reaffirming the government’s commitment to both heritage and progress.
