The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership with a press conference in Sikkim, where Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, provided an in-depth account of India’s developmental milestones under the Modi government. The celebration aimed to highlight major reforms and achievements that have shaped India’s socio-economic landscape since 2014.
One of the standout achievements is the Ayushman Bharat health scheme, which now offers free medical treatment up to ₹5 lakh for senior citizens above the age of 70. Minister Margherita described this as a clear indication of the government’s commitment to inclusive welfare. He stated that PM Modi’s decisive leadership has brought comprehensive development across India, ensuring the inclusion of every section of society.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has significantly impacted housing for the poor. Nearly 4 crore families have benefitted from this initiative—2.2 crore homes built in rural areas and 92.7 lakh in urban spaces. The scheme operates on a direct benefit transfer model, reducing intermediary interference and aligning with the BJP’s guiding principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas”.
Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, access to clean drinking water through household taps has dramatically increased. From 3.23 crore households in 2014, the number has jumped to 15.62 crore in 2024. This is seen as a monumental leap in providing basic amenities and improving quality of life in both rural and urban regions.
Infrastructure development has been a hallmark of the Modi administration. The length of National Highways has expanded from 91,287 kilometres in 2014 to 1,46,204 kilometres, with the pace of construction increasing by 2.5 times. The number of operational airports in India has more than doubled—from 74 in 2014 to 157 in 2024, improving regional and national connectivity.
In the railways sector, more than 47,000 kilometres of rail lines have been electrified over the past 11 years—a significant jump compared to the progress made in the six decades before 2014. Additionally, the launch of 136 Vande Bharat semi-high-speed trains marks a major step toward modernizing the country’s rail transport.
Employment and entrepreneurship have also seen considerable growth. The Skill India Mission has trained 2.27 crore youth, while over 4.1 crore people have either found jobs or started businesses as a result of government-backed initiatives. The number of officially recognised startups has surged from about 500 in 2016 to over 1.6 lakh in 2024, leading to the creation of 17.69 lakh direct jobs.
These combined efforts have resulted in a transformative economic journey for India. From being the 10th largest economy in the world in 2014, India has climbed to the 5th position, backed by strong Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows totalling $709 billion since Modi came to power.
In summary, the BJP's celebration underscored a decade of growth and reform under PM Modi’s leadership, covering healthcare, housing, infrastructure, transportation, employment, and economic development.
