Tipra Motha Party legislator Ranjit Debbarma has issued an urgent call to Assam Rifles officials in Tripura to intensify efforts for identifying and deporting illegal immigrants, as per the Ministry of Home Affairs' (MHA) directive issued on April 19, 2025. With the 30-day deadline set by the MHA expiring on May 18, and only eight days remaining, Debbarma has pressed for accelerated action to comply with the mandate.

In a detailed memorandum submitted to Brigadier Manish Rana, Debbarma emphasized the seriousness of the matter, noting that 22 out of the 30 days have already passed. He urged the Assam Rifles to take swift action to meet the deadline, highlighting the potential implications for national security. The MLA has long expressed concerns over the influx of illegal immigrants, particularly from Bangladesh and among Rohingya communities, and has previously written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in August 2024 and again in May 2025, demanding immediate intervention.

Debbarma's memorandum outlined a multi-pronged approach to effectively identify and deport the illegal immigrants. He called for the establishment of Assam Rifles checkposts (chaukis) at the entry and exit points of villages near military camps and border areas. These checkposts, he said, should be adequately manned with additional personnel to ensure effective monitoring and control of movement. To further bolster this effort, he recommended the cancellation of leaves for security personnel during this critical period to ensure optimal manpower deployment.

The MLA also proposed the creation of temporary detention centers equipped with essential facilities like water, electricity, and sanitation, to accommodate the illegal immigrants until their deportation could be arranged. He stressed that these facilities must meet basic human rights standards while still serving the purpose of national security.

In addition to logistical measures, Debbarma underlined the importance of intelligence and surveillance. He demanded increased monitoring of individuals in villages located near Assam Rifles camps who may be facilitating or engaged in illegal migration. He also suggested tracing and apprehending Indian brokers suspected of aiding in cross-border movements. To enhance visibility and operational efficiency, Debbarma further requested that jungle-clearing operations be undertaken around the perimeters of the Assam Rifles camps.

Throughout the memorandum, Debbarma reiterated that these steps are vital not just for the execution of the MHA directive, but also for maintaining the internal security and sovereignty of India. He concluded by calling on the Assam Rifles leadership to act with "utmost sincerity and urgency" in implementing the measures within Tripura’s jurisdiction.

The MLA’s appeal comes at a time of heightened concern over border security and demographic changes in the region. His proactive stance highlights growing political and administrative pressure to address the longstanding issue of illegal migration in the northeastern states, particularly in border-sensitive Tripura.
