Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary, a brave soldier of the Madras Regiment, was laid to rest with full military honours in his native village, Pub Makra, located in Assam’s Chirang district. His mortal remains returned home after a tragic incident — a devastating landslide in Chatten, North Sikkim — claimed his life while he was serving in a high-altitude operational area.

The 34-year-old soldier’s coffin, draped in the Indian tricolour, was carried solemnly through the narrow lanes of his village, where he was born and raised. The atmosphere was filled with deep sorrow but also pride, as locals gathered to pay their respects in silence. There were no loud cries, only bowed heads and tearful eyes — a reflection of the reverence people held for him.

Sunilal’s life was one of dedication and humility. Born on May 20, 1990, he joined the Indian Army in June 2012, fulfilling his dream of serving the nation and supporting his family. Over nearly 13 years, he served with distinction in some of the country’s toughest terrains and sensitive areas, always braving adverse weather and hostile conditions. Known for his discipline and calm nature, Sunilal earned the trust and respect of his peers.

His untimely death came after a sudden and massive landslide buried the Army post he was stationed at. The Indian Army launched a massive search and rescue operation that lasted nine days. Braving snow, rain, and treacherous terrain, Army teams used radar equipment, engineering tools, and dog squads in their relentless mission to bring back their fallen comrade. Their determination finally paid off when Sunilal’s body was found, offering a bittersweet moment of closure to the military fraternity and his family.

Sunilal’s character was shaped by resilience, courage, and modesty. Friends and fellow soldiers describe him as a quiet, dependable man who rarely spoke much but always acted with strength and sincerity. He was a skilled marksman and an accomplished sportsman who frequently represented his battalion in various sports tournaments, often bringing back medals and boosting the morale of his unit.

Despite the harsh conditions and high-pressure situations he encountered, he never complained. He simply did his duty with full commitment — a sentiment echoed by one of his colleagues who remembered him as “always ready, always strong.” Sunilal never sought attention; he was driven by a pure desire to serve the country and protect its citizens.

As his body arrived in Assam, hundreds gathered for his final rites — from local villagers and schoolchildren to government officials and military officers. His final journey was marked by military salutes, prayers, and heartfelt tributes. His family, though deeply grieving, stood with dignity and strength, supported by the community.

A cousin of Sunilal recalled his lifelong ambition, saying, “He always wanted to serve the nation. That was his dream.” Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary’s sacrifice will be remembered not only for his bravery but for the quiet heroism with which he lived and served. His story stands as a symbol of patriotism, perseverance, and honour.
