In a significant development aimed at strengthening air connectivity in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced several new flight routes by IndiGo Airlines on Monday, including the much-awaited Delhi–Jorhat direct service. The announcement was made through social media, where the Chief Minister detailed the outcome of his recent discussions with IndiGo’s top management.

The most notable highlight is the launch of a daily direct flight between Delhi and Jorhat, scheduled to commence on September 20, 2025. This fulfills a long-standing public demand, particularly from Upper Assam residents, for improved access to the national capital. The Delhi–Jorhat route is expected to significantly enhance convenience for travelers, including students, professionals, defense personnel, and tourists.

Alongside this, the Chief Minister also revealed other key expansions in IndiGo’s Assam network:

  • Guwahati–Silchar: An additional early morning flight will start from September 20, 2025, improving frequency and providing more flexible travel options for commuters in southern Assam.

  • Guwahati–Dibrugarh: A new early morning service will be introduced to enhance existing flight operations and facilitate smoother intra-state connectivity, especially for government officials, business travelers, and medical patients.

  • Guwahati–Navi Mumbai: This new route is scheduled to be added to IndiGo’s Winter 2025 schedule, giving travelers from Assam improved access to the rapidly growing Navi Mumbai area, which is emerging as an important commercial hub.

Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that these developments were possible due to proactive dialogue with IndiGo leadership. He expressed gratitude to the airline for recognizing Assam’s strategic importance and responding positively to the state’s connectivity needs.

The new routes, particularly the Delhi–Jorhat flight, are expected to bring wide-ranging benefits. For Upper Assam, the service reduces the dependency on connecting flights via Guwahati or Kolkata, saving time and making travel more seamless. For central and lower Assam, the increased frequency on key sectors like Guwahati–Silchar and Guwahati–Dibrugarh ensures greater mobility and accessibility for economic, healthcare, and educational purposes.

Moreover, the Guwahati–Navi Mumbai link will cater to the growing number of travelers flying to Maharashtra for business, education, or medical treatment. It also reinforces Guwahati’s status as a regional aviation hub in the Northeast.

The Chief Minister emphasized that these steps are not just about transportation but part of a broader vision to boost Assam’s economic development, tourism, and regional integration. Improved air connectivity will support trade, attract investment, promote inter-state cooperation, and make Assam more accessible to the rest of India.

In conclusion, the announcement marks a milestone in Assam’s aviation infrastructure growth. With enhanced connectivity to major Indian cities and better intra-state services, the new IndiGo routes represent a major leap forward for the state’s progress and integration into the national mainstream.
