On June 18, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced that classes at Mizoram Engineering College, located in Pukpui village near Lunglei town, will commence soon. He made the announcement during a public event held in Serchhip town, where he also felicitated students who had successfully cleared the Mizoram Civil Services Examination and various school board exams. The occasion was marked by appreciation of academic excellence and a vision for strengthening the state’s higher education landscape.
During his address, CM Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of youth empowerment through education and skill development. He mentioned that the state government is taking proactive steps to establish a state university and reinforce the capabilities of existing technical institutions such as the National Institute of Technology (NIT) and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). He stressed that the aim is to make every citizen self-reliant and encourage them to contribute to the growth and progress of Mizoram and the Mizo community as a whole.
The Mizoram Engineering College, which will now begin its academic sessions, was originally inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019. However, due to a combination of technical and infrastructural challenges, classes could not begin immediately following the inauguration. These delays were caused by the need to complete essential construction, install required facilities, and ensure the college met operational standards.
Situated around 12 kilometers from Lunglei town, the college campus has been constructed on a 24.9-acre plot of land in Pukpui village. The project was funded under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a central government initiative aimed at improving the quality of higher education in India. The total cost of the construction was ₹26 crore, and the campus is now ready for academic activities.
The newly built engineering college has a capacity to accommodate 300 students and is equipped with essential infrastructure and amenities. These include well-designed laboratories for practical learning, a comprehensive library for academic resources, a cafeteria for students and staff, and a student common room. Additionally, the campus provides separate hostel facilities for both male and female students, ensuring a residential setup conducive to focused learning.
Initially, the college will begin its academic journey with three core engineering departments: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. These foundational branches have been chosen to cater to the growing demand for skilled professionals in infrastructural and industrial development, both within the state and beyond.
Officials confirmed that all necessary arrangements have been made for the smooth commencement of academic sessions. Faculty recruitment, lab equipment installation, and other logistical preparations are nearing completion or have already been put in place. With these developments, the Mizoram Engineering College is expected to play a crucial role in promoting technical education in the state and offer new opportunities for aspiring engineers.
The launch of the college marks a major step forward in Mizoram’s educational advancement and reflects the state government’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education, especially in the field of engineering and technology.
