Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced a significant initiative to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the state by setting up drug de-addiction centres in all eight districts. This decision aligns with the state's zero-tolerance policy towards drug addiction and illicit trafficking, particularly given Tripura’s vulnerability due to its geographical location.

Speaking at an event marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, CM Saha revealed that the Ministry for the Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned ₹198 crore to establish a special drug de-addiction centre in the Sepahijala district at Bishramganj. Additionally, each of the eight district-level de-addiction centres will be set up at a cost of ₹20 crore. These centres aim to provide comprehensive care and rehabilitation for drug users while reducing the growing influence of narcotics in the state.

The chief minister emphasized that Tripura, being bordered on three sides by Bangladesh and sharing internal boundaries with Assam and Mizoram, has become a strategic corridor for drug cartels. These cartels have been exploiting the geographical layout to smuggle drugs into and through the state, leading to a rise in drug abuse, particularly among the youth.

Highlighting the severity of the issue, CM Saha expressed concern over how young people are falling prey to the drug menace, turning into victims due to the ease of access to narcotics. The government, therefore, is not only establishing de-addiction centres but also working on rehabilitating those affected. A significant part of this rehabilitation process involves creating awareness, counseling, and providing medical and psychological support to help drug users reintegrate into society.

Moreover, the chief minister disclosed that the state government is in the process of drafting rules and regulations to oversee the functioning of privately-owned de-addiction centres. The goal is to ensure accountability, quality of service, and adherence to health and safety standards in such facilities.

CM Saha also cited impressive achievements in the state’s law enforcement efforts. According to him, the seizure of drugs and other contraband increased by approximately 103% over the last year, compared to the previous year. Additionally, the destruction of seized narcotics rose by 132% during the same period. These figures, he noted, reflect the relentless efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb drug-related activities in the state.

The chief minister reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking through a coordinated and sustained approach. The plan includes strict legal enforcement, better infrastructure for treatment and rehabilitation, and enhanced regulatory oversight of private centres. This comprehensive strategy aims to safeguard the health and future of Tripura's youth while dismantling the networks that fuel the illegal drug trade.
