At the BRICS Summit Plenary session held on July 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the theme ‘Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence’. He emphasized the importance of making BRICS more effective in a world that is becoming increasingly multipolar. Highlighting India's commitment to global cooperation, PM Modi presented four key proposals aimed at enhancing collaboration among BRICS nations.

1. Improving Systems to Boost Credibility

PM Modi began by stressing the need to strengthen internal systems within BRICS to enhance the bloc’s credibility on the global stage. He explained that for BRICS to push for reformed multilateralism, it must first set an example through efficient internal mechanisms. The Prime Minister highlighted that demand-driven decision-making, long-term financial sustainability, and maintaining a healthy credit rating should be key focus areas—particularly when financing projects via the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB). He underlined that economic cooperation within BRICS is progressing steadily and must be further consolidated with transparent and accountable systems.

2. Collaborative Initiatives

In his second point, PM Modi urged BRICS members to undertake joint initiatives aimed at fulfilling the expectations of the Global South. He cited the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform established in India as an effective tool to share best practices in fields like agri-biotech, precision farming, and climate change adaptation. Further, he proposed the creation of a BRICS Science and Research Repository, which would support knowledge sharing and innovation and be particularly beneficial for developing nations. These collaborative steps, he argued, would enable BRICS to act as a voice and support system for emerging economies.

3. Ensuring Resilient Supply Chains

The third proposal focused on the resilience and security of global supply chains, especially those related to critical minerals and advanced technologies. PM Modi stressed that BRICS countries must work together not only to ensure cooperation in these vital areas but also to safeguard them against monopolistic practices. He stated that no single country should be allowed to use such resources solely for its own interest or weaponize them. Resilient and diversified supply chains, he noted, are crucial for the economic security and technological advancement of all member nations.

4. Promoting Responsible AI

Lastly, PM Modi highlighted the significance of Responsible Artificial Intelligence. He said India views AI as a transformative tool that can amplify human values and capabilities, guided by the mantra ‘AI for All’. The Prime Minister pointed out that India is already integrating AI in numerous sectors and emphasized the importance of balancing innovation with ethical governance. Responsible AI, according to him, must prioritize both addressing risks and fostering creativity in equal measure.

Leading by Example

In conclusion, PM Modi remarked that the Global South has high expectations from BRICS, and to meet these, member nations must adopt the principle of “Lead by Example.” He reaffirmed India's commitment to working shoulder to shoulder with BRICS partners to achieve shared global goals, promote inclusive development, and reinforce the multilateral world order.
