To commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced a series of initiatives aimed at honoring the late leader's legacy. At a special commemorative event held at Muktadhara Auditorium in Agartala, organized by the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA), Dr. Saha declared the institution of two prestigious awards in Dr. Mukherjee’s name and announced that the historic Agartala Town Hall would be renamed after him. Additionally, a marble statue of Dr. Mukherjee will be installed at the venue to preserve his memory.
The Chief Minister elaborated on the awards during his address. The first, titled the "Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Award," will be presented annually on Teachers' Day to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in their professional fields. The second, "Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Excellence Award," will be conferred starting next year on his birth anniversary to recognize individuals offering outstanding service in the domains of social work, politics, national service, or administration.
Dr. Saha highlighted the enduring relevance of Dr. Mukherjee’s philosophies and ideals in contemporary India. He stressed the importance of educating future generations about Dr. Mukherjee’s life, contributions, and nationalist vision, urging people to take inspiration from his dedication to national integration, education, and public welfare. The Chief Minister noted that Mukherjee’s values remain crucial in guiding India toward a more inclusive and self-reliant society.
Drawing connections between Dr. Mukherjee’s vision and the present-day initiatives of the central government, Dr. Saha applauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership since 2014. He pointed out how the socio-economic reforms carried out by the Modi government, including schemes like Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas, align with the values advocated by Dr. Mukherjee. According to Dr. Saha, these policies reflect the vision of unity, development, and inclusive governance that Dr. Mukherjee had championed during his lifetime.
One of the landmark reforms mentioned by Dr. Saha was the abolition of triple talaq, which he described as a significant step toward ensuring gender justice, particularly for Muslim women. He commended the central government's commitment to social reform and stated that Tripura’s government is actively working in alignment with these goals.
Further emphasizing the state’s commitment to development, Dr. Saha reiterated that the Tripura government is focused on ensuring the last-mile delivery of essential services and welfare benefits to every citizen. He stated that good governance and outreach to every household are core priorities for his administration. Dr. Saha concluded by reaffirming that the state’s policies are inspired by Dr. Mukherjee’s vision of “Akhand Bharat”—a unified and inclusive India built through sustained social transformation.
The commemorative event thus served as both a tribute to a national icon and a reaffirmation of the state government’s commitment to carrying forward his legacy through awards, reforms, and developmental initiatives.
