On the evening of July 6, 2025, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accompanied by Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, inaugurated the newly constructed Bhagadatta Flyover-2 at Rukminigaon in Guwahati. The inauguration marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure and easing traffic congestion in one of the city's busiest areas.

The Bhagadatta Flyover-2 is a four-lane structure stretching 660 metres across the critical Dispur–Six Mile corridor, which is known for its heavy traffic and bottlenecks, especially during peak hours. With its strategic location at the Rukminigaon junction, the flyover is expected to substantially improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and provide much-needed relief to daily commuters and local residents.

Constructed in just nine months—well ahead of schedule—the ₹112 crore project highlights Assam’s capability to fast-track development work without compromising on quality. Of the total cost, ₹88 crore was allocated for the main structural framework of the flyover, while the remaining funds were used for auxiliary infrastructure and finishing touches such as landscaping, lighting, and pedestrian pathways.

The flyover is named after the legendary King Bhagadatta, a historical figure from ancient Pragjyotishpur (modern-day Assam), adding a touch of cultural heritage and pride to the modern structure. The decision to honor King Bhagadatta reflects the state’s intent to blend historical reverence with contemporary progress, creating infrastructure that resonates with Assam’s identity and legacy.

At the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the project as more than just a piece of civil engineering. He stated, “The Bhagadatta Flyover-2 is not just an engineering achievement but a symbol of our resolve to build a better, faster, and more connected Assam.” His comments reflected the government’s broader vision of transforming Guwahati into a more livable and efficiently managed urban center through sustained infrastructure investments.

Government officials and urban planners view this project as a key enabler in improving overall connectivity within Guwahati. With growing population density and vehicle numbers in the city, traffic congestion has been a persistent issue. The completion of this flyover is expected to act as a catalyst for smoother urban movement and improved logistical efficiency in the region.

The rapid construction timeline of the Bhagadatta Flyover-2 also serves as a model for future infrastructure projects in Assam. It sets a benchmark in project management and execution, reinforcing public trust in the state’s ability to deliver critical infrastructure on time.

In summary, the Bhagadatta Flyover-2 is a significant achievement for Assam, combining modern engineering, cultural heritage, and a clear vision for urban development. It exemplifies the government’s focus on enhancing connectivity, reducing traffic congestion, and delivering timely infrastructure solutions that align with the aspirations of a rapidly developing state.
