During the April–June quarter of 2025, the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) experienced a significant surge in tea sales, marking a 27% year-on-year growth. Total tea sales rose to 32.21 million kilograms, up from 25.37 million kg in the same quarter of 2024. This surge reflects increased trading activity and growing demand, both domestically and globally.

According to Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) teas remained the most dominant segment in the auction. Sales of CTC teas increased from 16.17 million kg in 2024 to 20.46 million kg in 2025, confirming their continued popularity. However, despite the volume growth, the average price for CTC teas declined by ₹14.68 compared to last year, pointing to a price correction in this category.

The dust tea segment also witnessed growth, with sales climbing to 9.82 million kg, up from 8.25 million kg in the corresponding period last year. Notably, the average price for dust teas improved to ₹240.20, up from ₹225.30 in Q1 2024. This price increase signals a healthy demand in this segment and better price realization for sellers.

Among the different tea categories, orthodox teas showed the most dramatic growth. Sales volume doubled from 0.94 million kg in 2024 to 1.92 million kg in 2025, indicating a rising interest in this premium tea type. Additionally, prices for orthodox teas increased by ₹16.14, with an average of ₹279.63 per kg, reinforcing their value in the current market.

Bihani attributed this overall growth in sales and performance to increased participation from global export buyers, underlining the strengthening global presence of Indian teas. The growing demand for quality tea globally has significantly boosted premium categories.

In terms of price brackets, 22% of CTC leaf teas and 30% of dust teas were sold at prices exceeding ₹300 per kg. Another 38% of CTC leaf and 29% of dust teas were sold in the ₹200–₹299 range, while 40% of both categories were sold between ₹100–₹199. These figures suggest a healthy distribution across pricing tiers and reflect strong demand for both premium and mid-range teas.

The surge in sales and improved price performance in some categories demonstrate GTAC's critical role in India's tea trade. Its transparent and efficient auction platform has successfully supported producers, buyers, and traders alike. With positive crop trends and sustained buyer interest, GTAC is optimistic about handling even greater tea volumes in the upcoming months.

As one of the major tea auction hubs in the country, GTAC is well-positioned to enhance its role on both national and international stages. Its performance in this quarter signals not just a recovery but a growth trajectory, making it a central player in the global tea trade moving forward.
