Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82 in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness, will be buried in his hometown of Daura in Katsina state on Tuesday, according to state governor Dikko Umaru Radda. His body is currently being repatriated from the United Kingdom, with Vice President Kashim Shettima in London overseeing the arrangements. Preparations for his burial were underway in Daura on Monday.

Buhari was a significant figure in Nigeria’s political history. He first came to power as a military ruler between 1984 and 1985 after seizing control through a coup. Decades later, he re-emerged on the political scene and made history by becoming the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election, serving two consecutive terms from 2015 to 2023. His victory marked a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, representing a shift in public confidence toward opposition politics and raising hopes for reform and good governance.

Describing himself as a “converted democrat,” Buhari was both celebrated and criticized during his time in office. Supporters hailed him for his personal integrity, discipline, and strong anti-corruption stance. He was seen as a leader who prioritized national interest over personal gain, and he advocated for transparency and order in public service. President Bola Tinubu, in his tribute, called him “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” acknowledging Buhari’s steady leadership during difficult times and his deep belief in Nigeria’s potential.

Tinubu also announced that national flags would be flown at half-mast for seven days in Buhari’s honor and that he would receive full state honors at his burial. The tribute emphasized Buhari’s legacy as a disciplined public servant who tackled corruption and remained steadfast in his commitment to national progress.

However, Buhari’s legacy is not without controversy. Critics pointed out his failure to significantly improve the country’s economy and national security during his presidency. Despite his efforts, Nigeria continued to face major challenges, including widespread poverty, unemployment, and economic instability. Insurgencies, particularly by extremist groups such as Boko Haram, persisted and even worsened under his leadership, raising questions about the effectiveness of his security policies.

Former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, who had overthrown Buhari in a coup in 1985, also paid tribute, noting that while they did not always agree, he never doubted Buhari’s sincerity or patriotism. His statement reflected the complex relationship between Nigeria’s political and military elites and highlighted the personal respect Buhari commanded, even among former rivals.

Alexis Akwagyiram, managing editor at Semafor and an expert on Nigerian politics, also weighed in, saying that Buhari’s personal brand of honesty and integrity made him popular among many Nigerians. Nonetheless, Akwagyiram echoed concerns about Buhari’s inability to contain insurgency and improve living conditions during his presidency.

As Nigeria mourns the loss of one of its most influential leaders, the nation reflects on a presidency marked by both hope and disappointment. Buhari’s burial will not only close a chapter in Nigerian politics but also leave behind a complex legacy—of principled leadership, yet unmet expectations in key areas of governance.
